On the Impossibility of Freedom in a Country Founded on Slavery and Genocide (2014) was a one time performance about the struggle for freedom.  The performance referenced the 1963 Civil Rights struggle in Birmingham Alabama in which the government used high-pressure water jets from fire hoses against non-violent protesters and bystanders in an effort to maintain segregation and legalized discrimination.  On the Impossibility of Freedom in a Country Founded on Slavery and Genocide featured Dread Scott engaging in a Sisyphean attempt to walk into the battering force of water jetting from a fire hose. The performance stands as a metaphor for violent crowd control tactics and the continued resistance of the individual. This piece also reflects on the present-day struggles against racism and for social equality, as those demonstrated by the protests and then the militarized police response across the nation.
