Janine Antoni at the Hudson Guild Senior Center
Antoni’s project focused on voice, story, and memory. Recently a mother, Antoni had been questioning the way she raised her three-year-old daughter in relation to the way her mother raised her. She invited mothers belonging to the Hudson Guild Senior Center to advise her on how to be a good parent. Antoni recorded them telling their stories and singing lullabies they learned from their mothers. She recorded herself and her daughter singing as well. In the final sound and video installation, all the voices blend together to honor and celebrate the role of all mothers.
Janine Antoni was born in Freeport, Bahamas, and received her BFA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Antoni’s mixed-media practice encompasses photography, video, performance, sculpture, and inter-media installations. Her work is inspired by notions of family and women’s experiences, and has been shown extensively internationally.
